Vertical Vengeance Coaster — 50080 / 22808

The K’NEX Vertical Vengeance Coaster is an important set in the history of Micro K’NEX. Introduced in 2006 as part of the K’NEX Thrill Ride series, it used what were then described as brand-new Micro K’NEX parts to build a coaster more than five feet tall.

Vertical Vengeance is particularly interesting for identifying early Micro K’NEX parts. Several rods in this set have dimensions that differ from the later standardized Micro K’NEX range, and the set contains distinctive early connectors, clips, gears, track and transition parts.

Why is Vertical Vengeance listed separately under Series?

Vertical Vengeance is listed separately under Series because it represents an early generation of Micro K’NEX with an unusual parts range.

When the coaster was announced in April 2006, its Micro parts were presented as new. Most importantly for identification, the Micro rods supplied with Vertical Vengeance use a range of dimensions that differs from the later standardized Micro K’NEX rods.

Keeping these parts together as a separate reference makes it easier to identify early Micro K’NEX without mixing them silently with later parts.

Vertical Vengeance is not treated as a separate K’NEX system. Its separate Series entry is a cataloging choice based on its distinctive early Micro parts and dimensions.

Early Micro K’NEX rod sizes

Vertical Vengeance contains seven early Micro rod lengths:

509653Light Blue115 mm225

These dimensions should not be confused with the later standardized Micro K’NEX rod range.

The set also contains several early connector variants. Some early part numbers have a V suffix, such as 509023V, 509043V and 509093V. The suffix is retained here as documented; its official meaning has not yet been established.

The original K’NEX Parts Count is the primary reference for the contents of the set. Detailed part numbers and color names have been reconstructed from additional parts records. The published set contains 1,376 pieces, although one secondary reconstruction produces a one-piece discrepancy when its individual quantities are added together. The official K’NEX total of 1,376 is therefore retained.

The original Parts Count also shows set-specific graphics, stickers and decorative pieces. These belong to the complete set even where an individual official part number has not yet been verified. They should not be omitted simply because no reliable individual number is currently available.

How the coaster works

A motorized vertical chain lift carries the two coaster cars to the top of the structure. From there, the cars travel along approximately 33 ft (10 m) of track through loops, turns and spirals.

A separate sound unit adds coaster sounds and screams. The motor and sound functions require two AA batteries. Contemporary product information also states that the set originally included a parts organizer.

Contemporary coverage

Vertical Vengeance was already being publicized on April 20, 2006, when a toy-industry publication presented it as the newest addition to the K’NEX Thrill Ride series and announced availability for Fall 2006. Particularly significant for K’NEX history is that the Micro parts were explicitly promoted at the time as new.

Contemporary April 2006 Vertical Vengeance announcement

A contemporary review published on December 27, 2006 also described the new Micro parts, the more than five-foot-high construction, 33 feet of track, motorized chain lift and sound effects. The reviewer noted that the smaller Micro parts made the model more complex to construct than other K’NEX sets.
