Classic Clips
Last checked: 24 August 2026
Classic K’NEX clips are small connecting parts that attach to a Classic K’NEX rod and provide an additional connection or function.
Depending on the clip, the other part of the component may provide a hole, another rod connection, an angled connection, a ball or socket joint, a track connection, a hinge or a locking or retaining function.
This page includes the known Classic K’NEX clip types and their documented colour and part-number variants.
Clips

Two parts are simply described as K’NEX Clips. They attach at the end of a rod and can be used as a stop or retainer, for example to prevent a wheel from sliding off an axle.
| Function | Colour | Part number |
|---|---|---|
| Clip / end stop | Blue | 91440 |
| Clip / end stop | Bronze | 914401 |
These parts are clips by construction and historical naming. Their stopping function also makes them relevant when identifying parts used as stops or retainers.
Clips with Hole end

These clips attach to a rod and provide a hole at the other end.
| Colour | Part number |
| Dark Grey | 90901 |
| Purple | 909011 |
| Grey | 909012 |
The hole provides an additional attachment point without adding another normal rod end.
Clips with Rod end

These clips attach to a rod and provide a rod-type end at the other side.
A particularly large number of colour variants have been produced.
| Colour | Part number |
| Black | 90914 |
| Grey | 909141 |
| Mid Blue | 909142 |
| Fluorescent Green | 90914FG |
| Green | 90914G |
| Orange | 90914OR |
| Blue | 90916 |
| Gold | 90917 |
| Silver | 90918 |
| Fluorescent Orange | 90922 |
| Red | 90923 |
Colour alone should therefore not be used to identify this clip type.
Clips with Angled end 3D

These clips attach to a rod and provide an angled 3D connection at the other end.
| Colour | Part number |
| Orange | 91690 |
| Black | 916901 |
The angled end gives the clip a different construction and function from an ordinary Clip with Rod end.
Ball & Socket clips

Ball and socket clips provide movable joints.
One part ends in a ball and the matching part ends in a socket. When connected, the ball can move within the socket, allowing the angle between parts to change.
For identification purposes, the ball side is the male part and the socket side is the female part.
Standard Ball & Socket
| Connection | Male / Female | Part number |
| Clip with Ball end | Male | 90940 |
| Clip with Socket end | Female | 90945 |
These two clips form a standard ball-and-socket joint.
Large Ball & Socket

| Connection | Male / Female | Part number |
| Clip with Large ball end | Male | 99036B |
| Clip with Large socket end | Female | 99036S |
| Large Ball and Socket | Male + Female combination | 99036 |
The large version uses the same basic principle but provides a larger ball-and-socket connection.
Clip with Splice end

| Colour | Part number |
| Orange | 90911 |
The orange 90911 Clip with Splice end is associated with the K’NEX track system. It attaches to a Classic rod and is used to help attach track to a K’NEX model.
It should not be confused with the separate track splice. A track splice is a small rod-like track component used to join lengths of track together and is a different part.
Interlocking clips

Interlocking clips attach to a rod and provide a retaining or locking function.
| Colour | Part number |
| Tan | 90900 |
| Bronze | 91900 |
They can be used, for example, to position or retain moving parts such as wheels or gears on a rod.
Hinges
Hinges are also part of the Classic clip family. A hinge half attaches to a rod at one side and provides part of a movable hinge connection at the other.
The two complementary halves can be connected to create a joint whose angle can change.
Standard hinge halves

| Type | Colour | Male / Female | Part number |
| Hinge half | Blue | Male | 90912 |
| Hinge half | Green | Female | 90913 |
| Hinge half | Black | Female | 90919 |
Assembled hinge
| Description | Part number |
| Hinge assembled | 9091213 |
The assembled hinge consists of complementary hinge halves rather than being a completely different hinge principle.
Long hinge half

| Type | Colour | Part number |
| Hinge half long | Blue | 3020001 |
This is a specialised longer hinge half. It is documented separately from the standard blue hinge half 90912.
Poseable hinges

Two additional specialised hinge parts are documented within the Classic K’NEX clip family.
| Description | Part number |
| Hinge Poseable Index | 2972001 |
| Hinge Poseable Finger | 2973001 |
These parts are associated with poseable constructions and differ from the traditional 90912/90913 hinge pair.
Understanding clip connections
The name of a clip often describes the special connection or function at its other end.
Hole end
Provides a hole.
Rod end
Provides another rod-type connection.
Angled end 3D
Provides an angled connection suitable for three-dimensional construction.
Ball end
The male half of a ball-and-socket joint.
Socket end
The female half of a ball-and-socket joint.
Splice end
Provides the specialised connection used with the track system.
Interlocking clip
Provides a locking or retaining function.
Hinge
Provides one half of a movable joint.
Clip / end stop
Can retain another part on a rod or axle without providing a second normal connection.
Identifying a Classic clip
When identifying a clip, first look at how it attaches to the rod and then examine the function at the other end.
Connection type
A hole, rod end, ball, socket, hinge or angled end usually provides the quickest way to identify the clip type.
Male or female
This is especially useful for paired parts. A ball is the male side and a socket is the female side. Classic hinges also use complementary male and female halves.
Colour
Some clips have many colour variants. Colour is useful for identification but should not be treated as the defining feature.
Part number
The part number is particularly useful when distinguishing colour variants of otherwise identical clips.
Function
Some clips are easier to identify by what they do. The blue and bronze Clips can act as end stops, while 90911 is associated with attaching track and the Interlocking clips can retain parts on a rod.
Related Classic parts
Some closely related Classic K’NEX parts are not included in this list merely because they appear alongside Clips in a parts catalogue.
Connectors
The 3010001 2-way straight connector without hole is a connector and is covered with Classic Connectors.
Caps, Stops & Locks
Caps, stops and locking parts form a related group that will be examined separately. Some functions overlap: for example, a Clip can also perform a stopping or retaining function.
Track splice
The separate track splice used to join track lengths is a track component, not the same part as the 90911 Clip with Splice end.

About this overview
This page aims to document as many verified Classic K’NEX clip types, colours and part numbers as possible.
It includes standard, specialised, historical and discontinued parts. Parts are grouped primarily by their construction and function rather than simply by the catalogue section in which they happened to appear.
Additional uncommon variants may exist and can be added when they are reliably identified.
