Classic K’NEX Panels
Last checked: 24 August 2026
Classic K’NEX Panels create surfaces within a model. Unlike rods, which mainly form the framework, panels can fill the spaces between rods and connectors. They can be used for floors, walls, bodywork, platforms, decorative surfaces and many other building purposes.
Several panel families exist. The most systematic are the Tri Panels and Square Panels, which are available in four sizes: Mini, Small, Medium and Large. Other Classic K’NEX designs include Rectangular, Flex, Latticed Flex, Curved and Special Panels.
This overview concentrates on the constructional Classic K’NEX Panels. Graphic Panels are not included here.
Tri Panels

Tri Panels are triangular panels with three rod connection points.
Four sizes are known. One of the easiest ways to distinguish them is by counting the internal holes:
| Size | Internal holes | Part-number series | Known examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mini | 0 | 9101x | 91010 Black, 91011 Blue, 91012 Red, 91013 Orange |
| Small | 3 | 9102x | 91020 Black, 91021 Blue, 91022 Red, 91024 Silver/Gray, 91025 Yellow, 91028 Fluorescent/Translucent Blue |
| Medium | 15 | 9103x | 91030 Black, 91031 Blue, 91032 Red |
| Large | 35 | 9104x | 91040 Black, 91041 Blue, 91043 Orange, 91044 Silver/Gray |
The Mini Tri Panel has no internal holes. Its three projecting connection points distinguish it clearly from the Mini Square Panel.
Other documented colors and part numbers exist within these series, so the examples above should not be treated as a complete list of every color ever produced.
Square Panels

Square Panels have four rod connection points and also occur in four principal sizes.
Their number of internal holes increases considerably with size:
| Size | Internal holes | Part-number series | Known examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mini | 1 | 9106x | 91060 Black, 91064 Silver/Gray, 91068 Fluorescent/Translucent Blue |
| Small | 9 | 9107x | 91070 Black, 91072 Red, 91074 Silver/Gray, 91076 Green, 91078 Fluorescent/Translucent Blue |
| Medium | 37 | 9108x | 91080 Black, 91089 Brown |
| Large | 81 | 9109x | 91090 Black, 91091 Blue, 91093 Orange |
The Mini Square Panel has one central hole. This provides an immediate visual distinction from the Mini Tri Panel, which has no internal holes.
The external rod connection points are not included when counting the holes in these tables.
Identifying Tri and Square Panels
For an unknown Tri or Square Panel, a useful identification sequence is:
Shape → Size → Number of holes → Color → Part number
For example, a triangular panel with three internal holes belongs to the Small Tri Panel group, while a square panel with nine holes belongs to the Small Square Panel group.
This can be more reliable than identifying a panel from color alone, because many K’NEX components have been produced in additional colors over the years.
Understanding the 910xx part numbers
Many Classic K’NEX Tri and Square Panels have a particularly recognizable part-number pattern.
Within the known 910xx series:
- 9101x — Tri Panel Mini
- 9102x — Tri Panel Small
- 9103x — Tri Panel Medium
- 9104x — Tri Panel Large
- 9106x — Square Panel Mini
- 9107x — Square Panel Small
- 9108x — Square Panel Medium
- 9109x — Square Panel Large
The final digit also frequently corresponds with a recurring color. For example, known 910xx panels commonly use:
0 Black · 1 Blue · 2 Red · 3 Orange · 4 Silver/Gray · 5 Yellow · 6 Green
Other endings also occur, including numbers associated with fluorescent, translucent or other color variants.
This pattern is useful for identifying parts, but it should not be used to invent missing part numbers. A number that would fit the pattern is not evidence that K’NEX actually produced that particular panel and color combination.
Rectangular Panel

3310034 — Rectangular Panel small Light Blue
The Rectangular Panel is another Classic K’NEX surface component. Its proportions distinguish it from the regular Square Panel family.
Like the Square Panels, it has four rod connection points, but its rectangular shape gives builders another way to fill or construct surfaces.
It is treated as its own panel type rather than as a Square Panel variant.
Flex Panels

Classic K’NEX also includes panels designed to provide a more flexible surface.
Three principal sizes are documented:
| Size | Part no. | Known example |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 99008 | Yellow; Blue also known |
| Medium | 99007 | Orange known |
| Large | 99005 | Blue known |
Unlike the rigid Tri and Square Panel series, Flex Panels can be used where a surface needs to follow a less rigid or non-flat construction.
Different colors have been produced, so color should again be treated as an identification aid rather than as the definition of the part.
Latticed Flex Panel
24032 — Flex panel latticed

The Latticed Flex Panel has an open lattice construction rather than the more continuous surface of a regular Flex Panel.
Known colors include Red and Yellow.
Because of this distinctive construction, K’NEXCHANGE identifies it separately as Latticed Flex Panel, while retaining it within the broader Flex Panel group.
Curved Panel

99020 — Curved Panel
The Curved Panel provides a shaped surface rather than the flat surface of most conventional K’NEX Panels.
Known examples include Blue and Yellow.
The same component can perform different roles within a model. It can, for example, be used as bodywork or as a scoop or spoiler, depending on the construction.
These are applications of the component; its primary identification remains Curved Panel.
Special Panel
99013 — Special Panel large Yellow (+ 99013X?)
Found in set: 12013/69895

This distinctive large component is documented as a Special Panel.
Its construction does not fit neatly into the regular Square, Tri or Flex Panel size series, so it is retained as a separate Classic K’NEX Panel type rather than being forced into one of those families.
Panels can have more than one use
As with many K’NEX components, the documented name describes the physical part rather than every possible way in which it can be used.
A Curved Panel can become a spoiler, a Square Panel can form a floor or wall, and Flex Panels can form shaped surfaces.
The part itself does not change classification simply because a builder finds another use for it.

About this overview
K’NEX Panels have been produced in many colors and over different production periods. Part numbers and descriptions can therefore vary between sources.
K’NEXCHANGE identifies panels primarily from their physical construction, shape, size, number of internal holes, connection points and documented part number. Color provides useful additional information but is not used as the sole identifier.
The systematic 910xx numbering of many Tri and Square Panels can help with identification, but only documented or otherwise verified parts are treated as known variants.
Graphic Panels are treated separately and are not included in this Classic Panels overview.
