History of K’NEX

K’NEX began with a simple idea: connect rods and connectors to create structures. From that principle grew a construction system that has been used to build everything from small vehicles and machines to giant Ferris wheels, roller coasters and complex ball machines.

Since the early 1990s, K’NEX has developed in several directions. The original system expanded with mechanical and powered components, Kid K’NEX was created for younger builders, Micro K’NEX introduced construction on a smaller scale, and K’NEX Education brought building, mechanics and engineering into classrooms.

Along the way, K’NEX spread far beyond its American origins and became a construction system used by builders, collectors and educators around the world.

Before K’NEX

The story of K’NEX begins with plastics manufacturing.

The Rodon Group was founded by Irving Glickman in Pennsylvania in 1956. His son Joel Glickman became president of the company in 1972, and his brother Robert (Bob) Glickman later joined the business.

This manufacturing background became important when Joel developed the idea that would become K’NEX. Rodon’s experience with precision injection molding made it possible to manufacture large quantities of accurately fitting plastic parts.

The idea behind K’NEX

Joel Glickman is the inventor of K’NEX.

The often-told story of the invention begins at a wedding, where Glickman was playing with drinking straws and began thinking about ways in which rods could be connected to form structures. The Rodon Group itself preserves this story as part of the history of K’NEX.

The documented technical development can be traced to around 1990. The fundamental K’NEX patent family has a priority date of December 11, 1990.

At the heart of the invention was more than simply connecting one plastic part to another. Rods could snap laterally into specially shaped connectors, while the different rod lengths and connector angles followed a geometric system. This made it possible to construct rigid two- and three-dimensional frameworks from lightweight components.

That principle remains fundamental to K’NEX today.

From invention to toy

During the early 1990s, the concept was refined and prepared for large-scale manufacturing.

Rodon expanded its Pennsylvania manufacturing operation as production of the new construction toy approached. Joel and Bob Glickman developed the commercial K’NEX business, while Joel remained the inventor behind the construction system itself.

K’NEX reached the American toy market in late 1992. Following its initial sales, distribution expanded across the United States during 1993.

At the time it was simply called K’NEX. The term Classic K’NEX came into use later to distinguish the original rod-and-connector system from newer systems such as Kid K’NEX and Micro K’NEX.

From structures to moving machines

One of the characteristics that soon distinguished K’NEX was its ability to build large structures without requiring solid walls of building material.

The system also developed beyond static construction. Wheels, gears, pulleys, track, chains and different forms of power allowed builders to create working mechanisms and moving models.

During the mid-1990s, increasingly ambitious sets demonstrated these possibilities. The Big Ball Factory, introduced in 1995, became an early example of the complex moving ball machines that would become closely associated with K’NEX.

The 6-Foot Ferris Wheel followed in 1996. With thousands of parts and powered movement, it demonstrated the extraordinary scale that could be achieved with the rod-and-connector system.

Roller coasters and amusement rides became another characteristic part of K’NEX. Over subsequent decades, new track systems, motors and smaller components would allow increasingly elaborate rides to be constructed.

K’NEX goes international

K’NEX expanded internationally remarkably quickly.

In 1994, K’NEX entered a joint-venture and investment relationship with Hasbro that helped accelerate international distribution. The United Kingdom became an important early European market, followed by wider distribution across continental Europe.

Historical K’NEX documentation and contemporary reports show the brand spreading across the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany and Scandinavia, among other European markets.

The expansion did not stop in Europe.

By the later 1990s, K’NEX activities and distribution can also be documented across North America, Asia and Oceania. Canada and Mexico became K’NEX markets alongside the United States. Japan hosted K’NEX activities, while historical documentation identifies distribution or contacts in markets including Hong Kong and Taiwan. K’NEX exhibitions were held in Australia and New Zealand.

K’NEX subsequently reached markets in South America and Africa as well. The surviving historical record is not equally detailed for every region: later distribution can, for example, be documented in Chile, while South Africa provides a clear African example. Exact introduction dates for many countries remain uncertain.

The international history of K’NEX is therefore still being reconstructed from catalogs, advertisements, instructions, packaging and other contemporary material from around the world.

K’NEX in education

K’NEX also entered education much earlier than is sometimes assumed.

By the mid-1990s, K’NEX was being used in schools for subjects including design and technology, science and mathematics. A dedicated K’NEX Educational Division can be documented by 1997.

K’NEX was particularly suitable for practical investigation. Instead of only reading about a mechanical principle, students could construct it, operate it and modify it.

Educational materials and sets addressed subjects including structures, gears, pulleys, levers, wheels and axles, energy and mechanical systems. Computer control and programming were added later, and K’NEX Education increasingly became associated with STEM — science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Education therefore became a long-running application of the K’NEX construction system rather than a separate building system of its own.

An evolving Classic K’NEX system

The original K’NEX system did not remain unchanged.

During the 1990s and later years, many new components expanded what builders could make. Flexible rods made curved structures easier to construct. Panels could fill larger surfaces. New clips, hinges and adapters provided specialized connections, while gears, wheels, pulleys, track and motors increased the possibilities for mechanical construction.

Colors and finishes also became more varied.

By 1999/2000, catalogs were promoting new components, Flexi Rods, additional colors and specialized ranges such as Konstructors, Kreations and Maxima. Models could use different forms of power, including spring, battery, mains and solar power.

These developments did not create a replacement for the original system. Instead, they expanded the vocabulary of what is now generally called Classic K’NEX.

Electronics and the digital world

Around the turn of the millennium, K’NEX explored ways to connect physical construction with electronics and computers.

Cyber K’NEX was one of the most visible examples. Electronic and interactive components added another dimension to models, while computer-control products allowed mechanisms to interact with programming and control technology.

These products reflected a period when traditional construction toys were beginning to meet the rapidly expanding digital world.

They did not replace conventional K’NEX, but they form an important part of the company’s history of experimentation.

A new generation of roller coasters

Roller coasters continued to develop into one of the most recognizable branches of K’NEX.

The Screamin’ Serpent Roller Coaster, introduced in 2001, represented a new generation of coaster building. K’NEX continued developing amusement rides and coaster products in later years, eventually combining Classic and Micro K’NEX components, specialized track and powered operation in increasingly sophisticated models.

The later Thrill Rides ranges continued this tradition well into the 2010s.

Few K’NEX product categories illustrate the development of the system so clearly: from relatively simple structures to large, powered models in which structure, mechanics and movement work together.

Kid K’NEX

K’NEX took a fundamentally different direction when it developed a construction system specifically for younger children.

Kid K’NEX was commercially introduced in 2003. Its components are considerably larger and easier for young children to handle than traditional K’NEX parts. The system also incorporates shapes and character elements designed to encourage imaginative construction.

Kid K’NEX is therefore more than a product series within Classic K’NEX. It is a related but distinct rod-and-connector building system designed around the needs of younger builders.

Micro K’NEX

The next major system development moved in the opposite direction.

Technical development of Micro K’NEX can be documented by 2005. Commercial Micro K’NEX products were available by 2007.

Micro K’NEX retained the principle of rods and connectors but reduced the scale considerably. Transition components allowed Micro K’NEX and Classic K’NEX to be combined in suitable constructions.

The smaller components proved particularly useful for models in which a more compact structure was desirable, including many later roller coasters.

Micro K’NEX should not be confused with the term Micro Sets, which appeared in earlier K’NEX catalogs and referred simply to small sets rather than to the later Micro K’NEX system.

K’NEX Bricks and hybrid building

During the same period, K’NEX experimented with another approach: combining rod-and-connector construction with building bricks.

K’NEX Bricks and associated adapters allowed block-based structures and K’NEX frameworks to be incorporated into the same model.

The concept did not become a permanent fourth K’NEX system on the scale of Classic, Kid or Micro K’NEX, but it represents an interesting period in which K’NEX explored compatibility between different methods of construction.

New themes and new audiences

During the late 2000s and 2010s, K’NEX increasingly used specialized ranges and licensed properties to reach different groups of builders.

A particularly important example was the partnership with Nintendo, announced in 2010. Mario Kart Wii K’NEX products followed in 2011 and became a significant commercial product line.

Other licensed properties followed, while specialized ranges explored subjects such as architecture, vehicles, amusement rides and action-oriented construction. K-FORCE, introduced in 2015, for example, allowed builders to construct working foam-dart blasters using specialized K’NEX components.

These products sometimes introduced unusual parts and new building possibilities, but they should not be confused with separate K’NEX building systems. Most remained product ranges built around the broader K’NEX construction concept.

Education and STEM

At the same time, K’NEX Education continued to develop.

Educational sets became increasingly structured around specific learning objectives and engineering concepts. By the 2010s, ranges such as STEM Explorations explicitly connected K’NEX construction with science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

This continued a tradition that had begun with classroom use in the 1990s: learning through constructing, testing, changing and rebuilding working models.

A new owner

A major corporate change came in 2018, when Basic Fun acquired the K’NEX brand and assets.

The change in ownership did not end the historical relationship with The Rodon Group. Basic Fun announced a long-term manufacturing agreement under which K’NEX rods and connectors would continue to be produced by Rodon in Pennsylvania.

This distinction is important. The ownership of the K’NEX brand changed, while the manufacturing relationship with the company that had helped make the original system possible continued.

K’NEX today

K’NEX is now part of Basic Fun and has a history extending over more than three decades.

Many things have changed during that time. Product ranges have appeared and disappeared. New colors, components, mechanisms and themes have been introduced. Distribution arrangements and company ownership have changed. Experiments with electronics, bricks, licensed characters and specialized systems have expanded the boundaries of K’NEX.

Yet the original construction principle remains immediately recognizable.

Today it is useful to distinguish three principal K’NEX building systems:

Classic K’NEX — the original rod-and-connector system and its many compatible mechanical and specialized components.

Kid K’NEX — the larger construction system developed for younger builders.

Micro K’NEX — the smaller-scale rod-and-connector system, which can be connected to Classic K’NEX using suitable transition components.

Around these systems developed Education products, roller coasters, ball machines, amusement rides, licensed themes and countless other sets.

The result is more than thirty years of parts, sets, regional variations and building history — and a construction system that can still be recognized by the simple idea at its beginning: connecting rods and connectors to build something larger.

Old K’NEX catalogs, advertisements, instruction books, packaging, dealer material and other dated documents can help establish when particular products appeared and how K’NEX developed in different parts of the world.
