Classic K’NEX rods are the main structural elements of the Classic K’NEX building system. Although the six traditional rods are immediately recognisable by their familiar colours, many additional colours and specialised versions have been produced over the years.

This page brings these variants together in one place. It includes standard rods, rigid rods, Flexi rods, the modified orange roller-coaster rod, curved rods, extra-long rods, X-rods, steel rods and Classic-to-Micro transition rods.

Rod sizes

Classic K’NEX rods are traditionally associated with inch sizes. Metric descriptions are also widely used in parts lists and by sellers.

On this page:

  • inch is used as the primary size where a documented inch size is available;
  • mm is shown as the commonly used approximate seller or parts-list size;
  • sizes are not calculated by simply converting the metric description, because different sources sometimes use different approximations.

The familiar standard sequence consists of six lengths. Alternative colours do not necessarily use the same part-number sequence as the traditional colours.

The 32 mm Flexi rods are flexible versions intended for curved construction rather than ordinary straight structural use.

2″–2⅛” / 52–54 mm rods

The traditional standard rod in this size group is the blue 54 mm rod. Flexi versions are commonly described as approximately 52 mm or 2″.

Flexi rods of this size are commonly described as 86 mm or approximately 3 7/16″.

5″–5⅛” / 128 mm rods

The traditional 128 mm rod is red. This length is particularly interesting because standard, rigid and modified versions exist.

Orange 90958

The orange 90958 should not be treated simply as another colour of the ordinary 128 mm rod.

Its ends are modified to help connectors remain correctly positioned at the end of the rod. This was particularly important in the original Classic K’NEX roller coaster system, where maintaining the correct track width was essential.

Parts lists may simply describe 90958 as Rod 128mm Orange, but its construction and function distinguish it from the ordinary red 90954-type rod.

Tan rigid rod 90957

The tan 90957 is explicitly identified in parts documentation as a Rigid rod. It is therefore also different from both the ordinary 128 mm standard rods and the orange 90958.

7½” / 190 mm rods

The 190 mm group contains a particularly large number of variants. Standard, rigid and Flexi versions all exist.

The translucent 91110 is a Flexi rod and should not be confused with the translucent rigid 90956W. They have approximately the same overall length but are technically different parts.

Other rod lengths and forms

Not every Classic K’NEX rod belongs to one of the six traditional length groups. A number of specialised rods have also been produced.

Rigid 234 mm rod

The 405 mm rod is a straight Classic K’NEX rod, but its exceptional length places it outside the traditional six standard sizes. (‘Rotate Rod’?)

Curved rods

Curved rods have a permanent manufactured curve. They are therefore different from Flexi rods, which are designed to bend during construction.

The X-rod has a specialised form and should not be confused with an ordinary straight rod of similar overall dimensions.

There is also an x-rod especially for: Pirate Ship Park. (99042)

Steel rods

Steel rods are unusual Classic K’NEX-compatible parts and are fundamentally different from the normal plastic rods.

The 202 mm steel rod is also documented as a K’NEX part, but its original application is currently recorded as unknown.

Classic–Micro transition rods

Transition rods connect the Micro K’NEX and Classic K’NEX systems.

They are technically classified with Micro K’NEX in parts lists, but they are included here because one of their main purposes is to make a physical transition to Classic K’NEX construction.

Quick reference — traditional standard rods

The six traditional Classic K’NEX rods remain the easiest starting point for identification.

5″128 mmRed90954
7½”190 mmGrey90955

The traditional colour sequence is useful for recognising rods quickly, but it should not be treated as a complete colour system. Many alternative colours were introduced during the long production history of K’NEX.

Identifying a rod

When identifying a Classic K’NEX rod, check several characteristics rather than relying on colour alone.

Size
Start with the rod length. The traditional six lengths provide a useful reference, but specialised rods exist in additional sizes.

Construction
Determine whether the rod is standard, rigid, Flexi, modified/reinforced, permanently curved, steel, an X-rod or another specialised form.

Colour
Colour is useful, but many rod lengths were produced in numerous colours.

Part number
Part numbers are especially important because alternative colours do not follow one simple numbering system.

For example, the ordinary 190 mm grey rod is 90955, the black rigid 190 mm rod is 919561, the translucent rigid version is 90956W, and the translucent Flexi version is 91110. Similar-looking rods can therefore be technically different parts.

System
Classic-to-Micro transition rods belong to the interface between the two systems and should not be mistaken for ordinary Classic rods.

About this overview

This page aims to document as many verified Classic K’NEX rod types, colours and part numbers as possible.

It includes current, discontinued and historical variants. A part is not omitted simply because it is no longer manufactured or commonly sold.

K’NEX has been produced for many years, in many sets, colours and markets. Additional uncommon or short-lived variants may therefore still exist. New variants will be added when they can be reliably identified.
